Second year ended just as quickly as it had started, with Nathan cashing in on his new found “campus fame”, which eventually he discovered was due to his ‘couple interview’ with Ann back in his first year, apparently Ann showed it off to one of her friends and it spread like wildfire amongst the female students for being “adorable”. Luckily for him though, people still listened even if it wasn’t him interviewing his girlfriend, which meant he always had someone somewhere willing to interview. Which was great since it allowed him more time to socialise, and less time to research.
He’d even started building up a friendship group now, not to mention he was getting interviewed by first years on his course now.
Winter came around, and Ann had been hinting all autumn for Nathan to take her to this one particular park, everyone and everyone had been raving about it being ‘the best date spot’. She wasn’t usually one to conform to trends, but…she did want to try it just once. You know, to see what the fuss was about.
Anyway, Winter rolled around as said, and unsurprisingly, Nathan wised up to her hints once he’d met all his deadlines for the semester.
Soon enough Ann arrived, and Nathan almost immediately invited her to his home for the next two years. She wasn’t living with him, as "Living with your boyfriend in university is a recipe for disaster" and she had already made plans to live with some of her friends from her dorm last year.
"You know, it’s so crazy, I checked online on my blog, and suddenly all the recordings of my reports have crazy hits. I spent the whole first year with only my lecturer listening to grade me"
"Yeah, you’re suddenly really popular now. All my friends have been telling me how lucky I am. If only they knew I was second to your studies"
"Hey, hey! I just want to pass! Besides, if you really feel like I’m not doing enough for you, there are other things we could be doing right now."
Second year started just as expected, in the library. Reading books and researching on topics to report on, since, even after all the work he put into his freshman year, this is the beginning of his work actually counting towards his grade.
He arrived a week or so before Ann was due to arrive, so he was making the most out of his studying time as he possibly could.
Around 3pm each day he would try and give his daily campus report, after spending a few hours working on a strict schedule to follow.
Surprisingly though, on one particular afternoon, he actually had a listener. Normally people would ignore his reports, and walk past as he was ‘just another communications student’, but this guy actually had an interest in it. Not to waste an opportunity, Nathan immediately pulled the sucker in to interview.
“You’re Nathan right? I recognized the voice cause the girls in my house are always listening to your show these days!”
"People listen? And there I was thinking you were my first listener. Is there a name for my first live audience member at least?"
"Oh right yeah, my interview, I’m Jasper."
Finals swung around before anyone wanted them to (who does want finals to come around though?) and Nathan learned the hard way that if you didn’t have any time during the semester as it is, you definitely did not have time near the end.
In between giving interviews for his radio show, studying, and giving extra credit lectures on writing, he also somehow needed to eat, drink, sleep and all other human necessities, as well as fit in time to see his girlfriend, all without slipping from his estimated A grade and spot on the Dean’s list.
Nathan turned up at Ann’s party, making it the second party he’d been to, although the first one happened in his fraternity and he hadn’t actually participated in it. For the most part it was unfamiliar faces, some who came rushing to him saying things like "Oh, You’re Nathan! Ann’s told me all about you!" "So, you’re the infamous Nathan I’ve been hearing so much about." etc. And those who didn’t approach him with those type of phrases would ask:
"So, how do you know Ann?"
"She’s my girlfriend."
Ann and Nathan met often during the second semester, to the point where there was definitely something between them, just there was no name to it.
"Hey so uhm, my dorm is having a bonfire party this weekend, I was thinking maybe you could come…make this a little more official I guess?"
“so, by ‘doing something else’, you meant sit outside in the cold?”
"…I thought looking at the stars together was supposed to uhh…be romantic…"
"You’re cute." "But, we’re both in University now, not middle school, I’m sure you can be more romantic than this"
